The Artist is Present juxtaposes material artwork with digital representations of that work. The show aims to ask questions about what it means to create and consume art in a digital age. Abstract paintings have been dismantled and reassembled in large collages which sit on the floor in one half of the exhibition space. On the opposing wall, three wall-mounted smartphones digitally re-present the material abstract work. One of these three phones has its forward facing camera trained on the abstract work, and captures exhibition-goers against the gallery background as they step into the frame. Four other iPhones display digital collages composed of manipulated photos of original work intermingled with images of contemporary and references to modernist works art. One phone features a text chat linked to the artists phone so gallery visitors can submit and questions or comments in real time directly to the artist during their visit.
